Troubleshooting Common Issues
Before assuming something is wrong with your device, work through these common scenarios. The vast majority of SS WOHW issues are not hardware problems — they are setup and technique issues with straightforward fixes.
Thin or Light Vapor
Most Common
Heat Soak
Check Your Heat Soak Time
This is the single most common cause of thin vapor. If you are hitting the WOHW before it has fully soaked — at least 10 to 20 minutes from cold — the ruby balls will not have enough stored heat to produce thick vapor. Wait the full time. Set a timer if you need to.
Temperature
Check Your PID Setting
If your PID is set too low for your coil type, extraction will be weak. Bump up by 15 to 20 degrees, wait another 10 minutes for the change to stabilize through the ball chamber, and reassess on the next hit.
Draw Speed
Slow Down Your Draw
If you are pulling too fast, the air cools before it reaches the herb. Slow down to a medium, controlled draw. You should feel resistance throughout the pull. If it feels like you are pulling through nothing, you are going too fast.
Coil
Check Your Coil Coverage
If you are using a coil that does not fully cover the ball chamber, the balls at the uncovered end stay cooler regardless of PID setting. Upgrading to a coil with full chamber coverage — particularly the 10-wrap axial — is often the real fix for users who have tried everything else.
Uneven AVB (Some Spots Light, Some Dark)
Easy Fix
Loading
Tamp More Evenly
Make sure the herb is level across the screen and lightly tamped at the edges. Loose, uneven spots extract faster than denser areas, which causes the patchy AVB pattern. A consistent one-scoop load with a light edge tamp goes a long way toward even extraction.
Coil
Check Coil Coverage
Uneven AVB can also be a coil coverage issue. A coil that leaves part of the ball chamber uncovered creates hot spots and cool spots inside the heater. The herb near the hotter side extracts faster and darker. Switching to full-coverage coil resolves this.
Harsh or Hot Vapor
Easy Fix
Temperature
Lower the Temperature
You may be running too hot for your current setup. Drop 10 to 15 degrees and reassess your AVB color on the next bowl. Medium brown is your target. Very dark or charred means you have crossed into combustion territory.
Herb
Check Flower Moisture
Very dry flower combusts more easily and produces significantly harsher vapor. Use humidity packs like Boveda or Integra Boost to keep flower in the 55 to 62% range. This single change can dramatically improve vapor quality and smoothness.
Glass
Add More Water or Upgrade Your Glass
More water in your rig provides more cooling and filtration. If your piece allows it, try filling it higher. If you are running a very small or minimal piece without much filtration, upgrading to something with a proper percolator will make a noticeable difference on harsh hits.
Draw Speed
Slow Your Draw
A fast, hard rip can overwhelm the cooling capacity of your glass depending on its design. Try slowing down to a more controlled medium pull. This also raises effective temperature at the herb, which means you can often drop your PID setting slightly while getting better results.
PID Not Reaching Set Temperature
Check Hardware
Connection
Check All Power Connections
Make sure the coil cable is securely plugged into the PID output, and the PID power cable is firmly seated in the wall outlet. Loose connections are a common cause of inconsistent heating that looks like a temperature problem.
Breaker
Check for a Tripped Breaker
The 200W barrel coil can occasionally trip breakers on shared circuits with other high-draw appliances. The same can happen with any coil if the circuit is already near capacity or if the coil is damaged. If the PID loses power, check your circuit breaker panel before anything else.
Coil
Inspect the Coil for Damage
If the coil is damaged or has a loose internal connection it may not heat properly. Look for exposed wires, visible fraying on the cable sheath, or any burn marks. If visible damage is present, do not continue using the coil. Contact us for a replacement.
Heater Does Not Sit Right in the Coil
Easy Fix
Coil Match
Verify Your Coil and Dock Match
The barrel coil with a bend is designed specifically for the Crossing dock channel. The axial coils are designed for the Simple and Bigger Docks. Using the wrong coil in the wrong dock results in a poor fit that can cause uneven heating, instability, and in the case of the 10-wrap axial in the Crossing dock, an extremely hot station. Double-check you have the right combination.
Glass Adapter Stuck on the Bowl
Easy Fix
Prevention
Remove While Still Warm
This happens when the adapter cools and contracts around the O-rings. The best prevention is making adapter removal a habit immediately after every session while everything is still warm and expanded. It takes seconds and avoids the stuck adapter situation entirely.
Fix
ISO Soak and Straight Pull
If it is already stuck, soak the joint area in isopropyl alcohol and hot water, or apply a small amount of O-ring lubricant to the joint. Grip the glass joint and bowl firmly and pull straight apart. Do not wiggle or twist unless you feel some give, as lateral force can crack the glass. Apply Ed’s Bomb Ass Butter or beeswax to the O-rings after freeing them to make future removal much easier.
