A 18mm joint passes more air volume, which runs cooler — you may need to set the PID 10 to 20 degrees higher to compensate. A 14mm joint is more restrictive and runs hotter.

Twist Mode (default) uses the internal spinner to create a vortex path through the ruby bed. This increases air-to-ruby contact time, which means more heat transfer per draw and a more turbulent, complex extraction character. Straight-Airflow Mode removes the spinner, adds the 1.5mm machined screen in its place, and allows you to add up to 100 additional ruby balls. Air moves in a direct line. The draw feels smoother and more linear, the flavor profile shifts, and the extraction character changes noticeably. Neither mode is objectively better — they genuinely feel different and users develop preferences based on session style and temperature range.

Start by slowing your draw down. If that doesn’t help, bump the PID up 10 to 20 degrees and give the ruby mass a full 5-minute soak between sessions before re-evaluating. Most first-session issues resolve by simply drawing slower and soaking longer.

Ruby balls are extremely durable under normal thermal cycling. Cracking or chipping is uncommon but does happen if the unit is dropped or thermally shocked (e.g., rapid heating from cold). Visually inspect occasionally by looking into the housing — cracked balls will have visible fracture lines or irregular geometry. A cracked ball doesn’t cause a safety issue, but replacing it maintains the thermal consistency of the bed. A simple plug adapter will not fix a voltage mismatch — plugging a 110V unit into a 220V outlet will damage or destroy the PID controller. Crossing Technology produces 220V versions for international markets, but we do not carry those. If you are outside the US or Canada, please source from a distributor in your region to get the correct voltage unit.

Pure convection means you place the Ruby Twist on the loaded bowl and draw immediately. The heated air does all the work. This produces clean, terpene-forward vapor with precise flavor. Hybrid mode means you let the Ruby Twist sit on the bowl for 15 to 60 seconds before drawing. The titanium housing conducts heat down into the material from below while the convection works from above simultaneously. Hybrid hits harder and produces denser vapor but with slightly less flavor precision. Use convection for flavor-focused sessions at lower temps. Use hybrid when you want maximum extraction intensity.
