Halftone Planets and Aerosol Grain
The spheres carry the piece. The largest is a cream white planet at the upper right, and it is not filled flat: it is rendered in dense halftone stippling that starts solid at one edge and breaks down into a fine grey dot screen across the body, with a diagonal bar running over it that fades red into white. Lower left there is a big orange sphere handled the same way, speckled through the middle with a dark shadow cast beneath it so it sits in front of the field rather than on it. Smaller orange and vermilion spheres sit out to the middle and lower right. Between them the black is peppered with hundreds of small cream dots doing the job of stars.
Cutting across all of that is the graphic layer. Broad slabs of cream and pale yellow run diagonally over the scene with stepped notched ends, reading as ribbons or as panels depending on how long you look at them. Behind and around them sit sprayed bands of cyan and mustard overspray with visible aerosol grain, drip spatter where the paint would have run, and a few short red flicks. The hard edged slabs sitting over soft sprayed fades is exactly the layering you get when a stencil goes down on a wall that has already been hit, and reproducing that in flat screen ink is the trick this design pulls off.
Practically, the black ground is the reason to pick this one. It hides the mess a working surface collects and it makes the print look lit rather than printed. The pattern sits inset from the edge inside a narrow border of bare black rubber, which on a black artwork reads as one continuous field rather than as a frame. There is no UV in it. Standard ink, no reactive application, no lighting trick, and none is needed.

Rubber That Already Had a First Life
Moodmats started with scraps from old wetsuits and discarded scuba and surf neoprene, material that was headed straight for a landfill. That became Lava Rubber, and Lava Rubber is what every Moodmat is cut from. The feedstock now comes from wetsuits, gaskets, weatherstripping, seat molds, and other clean scrap that gets collected or donated. More than two tons of it moves through the New Jersey shop every month, gets pressed into sheet stock, then die-cut and screen printed. Keeping that material out of the ground has been the point from day one.
Closed-Cell Neoprene
Closed-cell rubber does not drink up what you spill on it. Water, reclaim, and terp splash sit on the surface instead of soaking in, so a wipe with soapy water puts it back to new.
It Stays Put
The rubber grips whatever it is sitting on and grips whatever you set on top. A rig that would skate across a glass table or a finished desk stops moving the second it lands on a Moodmat.
Tough and Self-Extinguishing
Heat resistant, self-extinguishing, and built out of material that already survived a first life. This is not a printed coaster that curls after a month on the table.

Wipe it down with warm water and a little dish soap, then let it air dry flat. That is the whole routine. Do not run it through a washing machine or a dryer, do not scrub the print with an abrasive pad, and do not rest a lit torch or a glowing-hot banger directly on the surface. Use a stand or a puck for anything still at temperature.

Know Before You Buy
Upcycled Means Variation
The rubber is reclaimed scrap, so base color, speckle, and surface texture shift slightly from sheet to sheet. Two mats of the same design will not be photocopies of each other. That is how you know it is the real material and not virgin stock.
Heat Resistant, Not Heatproof
The rubber is self-extinguishing and handles warm gear without complaint. It is not a torch pad. Park anything still glowing on a proper stand or a quartz puck, not on the print.
The Spray Texture Is Printed, Not Sprayed
Everything that looks like aerosol on this mat is screen printed ink. The grain, the drip spatter, the soft fades and the dot gradients are all part of the artwork rather than paint sitting on top of the rubber. The surface is flat and smooth to the hand like every other Moodmat, and nothing on it will flake, lift or rub off with use.
The Middle of Three Squares
Three sizes share this name and each one carries a completely different print. Eight inches is the middle, and it is the size most people actually want on a table: enough room for a rig and a banger without taking the whole desk. The twelve inch above it is a mid century atomic pattern on cream and the five inch below it is an eighties Memphis pattern on cerulean blue. Different art, same family.
This Image Came From the Maker
The picture on this page is a flat cutout of the printed face saved from the manufacturer’s product page rather than a photograph of the mats we have here. The artwork is accurate. The exact base speckle of the rubber underneath is not, because reclaimed stock shifts sheet to sheet. There is nothing in the frame for scale and there is no shot of the back. Our own photos are on the list.
