The Print
A Calavera With Nothing Behind It
The whole piece is one head. It is a tall egg shaped bald cranium with two curls of hair standing up at the crown, a pair of round ears sticking straight out from the sides and a jaw heavy enough to take up the bottom third of the drawing. Every feature on it has been rebuilt as sugar skull ornament. The eyes are two frosted donuts, sprinkles and centre holes included, sitting where the eyes belong. The nose is a solid rounded shape outlined in white. The mouth is an enormous grinning skull mouth running the width of the face, two rows of blocky teeth split by a curved lip line, with four teardrop flourishes stacked above it. Filigree scrollwork wraps the temples, the jaw and the crown, the way it does on a painted calavera.
Three small vignettes sit in the open space of the forehead. One is a tallboy beer can drawn in outline. One is a faceted diamond with sparkle strokes radiating off it. The third is a small spiky haired cartoon dog with its tongue hanging out. There is lettering inside the art as well, a short brand name across the can and a name set in script, and we are not going to reprint either one here. What we will say is that the calavera treatment is doing real work: this is not a cartoon with a skull drawn next to it, it is a cartoon taken apart and reassembled out of sugar skull parts.
Technically this is the unusual one in the catalog and the reason to want it. White ink, one colour, printed directly on untreated black rubber with no background field underneath. In raking light you can see the crumb texture of the reclaimed stock coming up through the white, which is a thing a printed black panel would have hidden completely. It is also UV reactive. We have had one under a lamp and it reacts, and since there is no blacklight photograph of this design we are not going to tell you what colour it goes.

The back of the mat carries the handle in lowercase squared stencil type, then an x, then the moodmats wordmark. That is the entire record of who made this and it is enough to credit properly. There is no biography attached here because nothing on the piece or on our sheet supports one, and we would rather credit an artist accurately than pad the page out with a story we made up.

Rubber That Already Had a First Life
Moodmats started with scraps from old wetsuits and discarded scuba and surf neoprene, material that was headed straight for a landfill. That became Lava Rubber, and Lava Rubber is what every Moodmat is cut from. The feedstock now comes from wetsuits, gaskets, weatherstripping, seat molds, and other clean scrap that gets collected or donated. More than two tons of it moves through the New Jersey shop every month, gets pressed into sheet stock, then die-cut and screen printed. Keeping that material out of the ground has been the point from day one.
Closed-Cell Neoprene
Closed-cell rubber does not drink up what you spill on it. Water, reclaim, and terp splash sit on the surface instead of soaking in, so a wipe with soapy water puts it back to new.
It Stays Put
The rubber grips whatever it is sitting on and grips whatever you set on top. A rig that would skate across a glass table or a finished desk stops moving the second it lands on a Moodmat.
Tough and Self-Extinguishing
Heat resistant, self-extinguishing, and built out of material that already survived a first life. This is not a printed coaster that curls after a month on the table.

Moodmats print in runs, and runs end. Once a design is out, it is out. Artist collabs and drop exclusives regularly land in quantities of ten to twenty five pieces, which is why the people who collect these track drops, trade them, and frame the ones they will never put a rig on. If this specific print matters to you, the time to grab it is while it is still on the shelf.
Nothing on This Piece Says How Many Exist
There is no number box on the back, no denominator, no run size printed anywhere and no live sale line. That means we cannot tell you whether this design is open stock or a short run, and we are not going to guess in either direction to make the listing sound better. The tier on this page is earned by the named artist and by the print technique, and nothing further is claimed. What we can tell you is that the back carries the artist’s own handle and that one of these is on our shelf.
No Reprints
Moodmats does not go back and run a sold-out design again. When this one is gone from our shelf and theirs, the only way to get it is from somebody who already has one.
Worth Hanging
A print this limited does not have to earn its keep under a rig. Plenty of these end up on a wall, in a frame, or stacked with the rest of a collection.

Wipe it down with warm water and a little dish soap, then let it air dry flat. That is the whole routine. Do not run it through a washing machine or a dryer, do not scrub the print with an abrasive pad, and do not rest a lit torch or a glowing-hot banger directly on the surface. Use a stand or a puck for anything still at temperature.

Know Before You Buy
Upcycled Means Variation
The rubber is reclaimed scrap, so base color, speckle, and surface texture shift slightly from sheet to sheet. Two mats of the same design will not be photocopies of each other. That is how you know it is the real material and not virgin stock.
Heat Resistant, Not Heatproof
The rubber is self-extinguishing and handles warm gear without complaint. It is not a torch pad. Park anything still glowing on a proper stand or a quartz puck, not on the print.
UV With No Photo to Prove It
This print is reactive and we are telling you so because we have had it under a lamp, not because we can show you. There is no blacklight photograph of this design, so we describe no glow colours and we make no promise about how bright it goes. Reactive is also not glow in the dark: it needs a 365nm or 395nm blacklight on it and it will not charge up and shine on its own.
The Black Is the Rubber, So It Varies
Nothing is printed behind the white line, which means the base speckle in the reclaimed stock sits inside the artwork rather than around the outside of it. Every sheet of this material flecks differently. The white line will match the photo. The exact pattern of crumb showing through the black will not, and on this design that is more visible than it is on any printed panel.
Die-Cut Means Irregular Edges
The outline follows the drawing, so you get ear tips and two hair curls instead of a clean circle or square. The listed twelve inches is the widest point rather than a uniform footprint, and the curls at the crown are the narrowest sections of rubber on the piece. Measure your space if it is tight.
