Limited Run of 25 Artist Proof

Recycled Rubber Art Mat

A green cartoon frog head filling an eight inch square, grinning wide open with a lit joint clenched in one corner of its mouth. Two bulging eyes sit up on top of the head, hot pink eyeballs with black slit pupils under heavy lids. Where a collar would go there is a spiked ring of long cannabis leaves radiating out across the bottom of the mat, and a fat white and pale blue smoke plume billows up off one side. The back is inked AP over a printed run of 25, which makes this piece an artist proof rather than a number in the edition.

The Print

A Green Frog, Wide Open and Very Pleased

The art runs nearly to the edge of the square and stops at a narrow lip of bare black rubber, with soft rounded corners on all four sides. The field behind the figure is a flat lavender periwinkle, and printed into it in a slightly darker tone is a ghost pattern of overlapping cannabis leaves and cloud puffs. It reads as texture from across a room and as pattern once you are close to it, which is the right way round for a background to work.

Centred on that is the head of a cartoon frog in bright kelly green, speckled all over with tiny white dots. The mouth is open in a wide grin with a magenta interior and a paler pink tongue, and a lit white joint with a jagged burning tip is clenched in one corner of it. Two large eyes sit up on top of the head rather than in it, hot pink eyeballs with black slit pupils under heavy upper lids, which is what gives the face its half gone expression. Where a collar would go there is a spiked ring of long green cannabis leaves radiating out across the bottom of the mat. A fat white and pale blue smoke plume billows up off the left side of the head and curls back on itself.

It is heavy uniform black cartoon outline over flat fills with almost no shading anywhere, which is exactly what suits screen printing on reclaimed rubber and the reason the whole thing stays crisp. There is no lettering and no signature on the front, and there is no UV in it. Everything that makes this particular piece unusual is on the back: the maker’s name in chunky drip capitals, the moodmats wordmark, and a hand inked box reading AP over a printed 25.

Designed By

Born Ready Designs

Printed on the back of the mat in two lines of chunky horror drip capitals, then an x, then the moodmats wordmark, then the number box. Born Ready Designs is a studio rather than a person and no individual is named anywhere on the piece, so no individual is named here. There are no social handles on this back, no live sale line and no stickers, so the name and the box are the whole record the mat keeps. What that box carries is the thing that matters on this row, which is AP rather than a digit.

Made in New Jersey Since 2009

Rubber That Already Had a First Life

Moodmats started with scraps from old wetsuits and discarded scuba and surf neoprene, material that was headed straight for a landfill. That became Lava Rubber, and Lava Rubber is what every Moodmat is cut from. The feedstock now comes from wetsuits, gaskets, weatherstripping, seat molds, and other clean scrap that gets collected or donated. More than two tons of it moves through the New Jersey shop every month, gets pressed into sheet stock, then die-cut and screen printed. Keeping that material out of the ground has been the point from day one.

Closed-Cell Neoprene

Closed-cell rubber does not drink up what you spill on it. Water, reclaim, and terp splash sit on the surface instead of soaking in, so a wipe with soapy water puts it back to new.

It Stays Put

The rubber grips whatever it is sitting on and grips whatever you set on top. A rig that would skate across a glass table or a finished desk stops moving the second it lands on a Moodmat.

Tough and Self-Extinguishing

Heat resistant, self-extinguishing, and built out of material that already survived a first life. This is not a printed coaster that curls after a month on the table.

Where People Actually Put These

It Does Not Have to Hold a Rig

A Moodmat protects a surface and grips what sits on it. Whether that thing is a banger, a camera, or nothing at all is up to you. They are called Moodmats for a reason. Pick the one that matches how you feel and put it wherever it belongs.

Rig and Glass Pad

The job it was built for. Keeps glass off hard surfaces and keeps hard surfaces off your glass.

Display Surface

Figures, models, controllers, dice, cameras, watches. Anything worth setting on something intentional.

Wall Art

Plenty of these never touch a table. Hang it, frame it, or pin it behind the setup and let the print do the work.

Desk and Everyday

Trivet for hot pans, landing spot for keys, pad under a pet bowl, cushion on a camp table.

Why It Matters

Runs End. Prints Do Not Come Back.

Moodmats print in runs, and runs end. Once a design is out, it is out. Artist collabs and drop exclusives regularly land in quantities of ten to twenty five pieces, which is why the people who collect these track drops, trade them, and frame the ones they will never put a rig on. If this specific print matters to you, the time to grab it is while it is still on the shelf.

01

An Artist Proof, Which Is Not a Number in the Run

The edition for this design is twenty five and that figure is printed on the back of the mat. The box above it, the one that is normally inked by hand with a number, is inked AP instead. An artist proof is a copy pulled outside the numbered edition, traditionally so the artist can check the print, and traditionally kept by them rather than sold. It is counted separately from the edition rather than as part of it. So we will not call this one of twenty five, because it is not one of twenty five. How many proofs were pulled is not printed anywhere on the mat and we are not going to guess at it. One on hand, and there is nothing behind it.

02

No Reprints

Moodmats does not go back and run a sold-out design again. When this one is gone from our shelf and theirs, the only way to get it is from somebody who already has one.

03

Worth Hanging

A print this limited does not have to earn its keep under a rig. Plenty of these end up on a wall, in a frame, or stacked with the rest of a collection.

The Details

Specs and Care

Wipe it down with warm water and a little dish soap, then let it air dry flat. That is the whole routine. Do not run it through a washing machine or a dryer, do not scrub the print with an abrasive pad, and do not rest a lit torch or a glowing-hot banger directly on the surface. Use a stand or a puck for anything still at temperature.

Straight Talk

Know Before You Buy

01

Upcycled Means Variation

The rubber is reclaimed scrap, so base color, speckle, and surface texture shift slightly from sheet to sheet. Two mats of the same design will not be photocopies of each other. That is how you know it is the real material and not virgin stock.

02

Heat Resistant, Not Heatproof

The rubber is self-extinguishing and handles warm gear without complaint. It is not a torch pad. Park anything still glowing on a proper stand or a quartz puck, not on the print.

03

No UV on This One

Standard ink, full color, no reactive application. A blacklight does nothing to it. The palette is bright enough that people assume otherwise, so it is worth saying plainly. Several Moodmats do light up under a lamp and this print is not among them.

04

We Do Not Know How Many Proofs Exist

The mat tells us two things. The edition is twenty five, and this copy is a proof rather than part of it. What the mat does not say is how many proofs were pulled, and nothing else we have says it either, so we are not going to put a figure on it. Proof counts on small runs tend to be low, and that is a general habit of print editions rather than a fact about this design, which is why it is sitting in this card and not in the copy above.

05

A Rig Lands on the Face

The frog fills the square almost corner to corner, so whatever you set on this mat sits on top of the print. That is worth knowing before you buy rather than after. If it is going under a rig, the lower corners either side of the leaf collar are the emptiest ground on the piece and the least painful place to park a base. Plenty of people hang this sort of thing instead.
