Dolphin Smoker Moodmat

The Print
A Dolphin, a Pipe, and a Ring of Plumeria
The figure stands upright and faces forward and left with the head tipped up, the long rostrum open on two rows of small conical teeth against dark red gums. Head and back are rendered in an iridescent oil slick palette, lavender into mint into pale blue into violet, laid down in fine diagonal hatching and shot through with crackle like white filaments, all of it held together by a heavy dark plum outline. A round black eye with a single catchlight sits above a fine line fishbone tattoo, and a fine line anchor sits lower on the jaw. The lower body sweeps across the bottom of the piece in pale blue grey and carries a fine line jellyfish.
It is wearing an open short sleeved aqua Hawaiian shirt printed with small black palm trees, the collar flaring wide over a bare chest with a script tattoo running across it. One flipper holds up a squat russet corncob textured pipe bowl with two thin brass bands and a long pale bent stem angling back toward the mouth. The other pinches a small red rectangular object with a cream and gold band. Everything in the drawing is line work first and color second, and the tattoo details are drawn at a much finer weight than the outline, which is what keeps a busy figure from going muddy.
Filling the entire outer ring is a dense wreath of overlapping five petal plumeria blossoms, white with soft yellow throats and thin grey keylines. Between the figure and the flowers the ground is bare black rubber, so the material itself is the background rather than a printed field. The cut then follows the outside of that wreath with an even narrow margin around each petal, which turns the outline into a scalloped, petal lobed oval instead of a circle. There is no UV in the print. It is standard ink, and the whole effect comes out of the drawing and the shape of the cut.

Both names are hand lettered on the back in white marker capitals with a plus sign between them, followed by an x and the moodmats wordmark. That is the whole record carried on the piece: two named individual artists, no studio, no number box and no denominator. The maker’s own product page credits the same pair and lists the design as a limited edition of 420, so the run size comes from there rather than from anything printed on the rubber. A collaboration between two people who signed it themselves, put out through the Moodmats artist series.

Rubber That Already Had a First Life
Moodmats started with scraps from old wetsuits and discarded scuba and surf neoprene, material that was headed straight for a landfill. That became Lava Rubber, and Lava Rubber is what every Moodmat is cut from. The feedstock now comes from wetsuits, gaskets, weatherstripping, seat molds, and other clean scrap that gets collected or donated. More than two tons of it moves through the New Jersey shop every month, gets pressed into sheet stock, then die-cut and screen printed. Keeping that material out of the ground has been the point from day one.
Closed-Cell Neoprene
Closed-cell rubber does not drink up what you spill on it. Water, reclaim, and terp splash sit on the surface instead of soaking in, so a wipe with soapy water puts it back to new.
It Stays Put
The rubber grips whatever it is sitting on and grips whatever you set on top. A rig that would skate across a glass table or a finished desk stops moving the second it lands on a Moodmat.
Tough and Self-Extinguishing
Heat resistant, self-extinguishing, and built out of material that already survived a first life. This is not a printed coaster that curls after a month on the table.

Why It Matters
Runs End. Prints Do Not Come Back.
Moodmats print in runs, and runs end. Once a design is out, it is out. Artist collabs and drop exclusives regularly land in quantities of ten to twenty five pieces, which is why the people who collect these track drops, trade them, and frame the ones they will never put a rig on. If this specific print matters to you, the time to grab it is while it is still on the shelf.
A Run of 420, With No Number on the Piece
Four hundred and twenty is the figure the maker publishes for this design on their own product page, and that page is the whole authority behind it. The mat does not carry it. The back has two hand lettered names and the moodmats wordmark, with no number box, no denominator and no drop line anywhere on it, so there is no position in the run for us to quote and we are not going to invent one. Four hundred and twenty is also a big number as these things go, so take it as a fact about how the design was released rather than as a reason to hurry. What this piece has going for it is two named artists who signed the back themselves and a twelve inch die cut that took real work to produce.
No Reprints
Moodmats does not go back and run a sold-out design again. When this one is gone from our shelf and theirs, the only way to get it is from somebody who already has one.
Worth Hanging
A print this limited does not have to earn its keep under a rig. Plenty of these end up on a wall, in a frame, or stacked with the rest of a collection.

Wipe it down with warm water and a little dish soap, then let it air dry flat. That is the whole routine. Do not run it through a washing machine or a dryer, do not scrub the print with an abrasive pad, and do not rest a lit torch or a glowing-hot banger directly on the surface. Use a stand or a puck for anything still at temperature.

Know Before You Buy
Upcycled Means Variation
The rubber is reclaimed scrap, so base color, speckle, and surface texture shift slightly from sheet to sheet. Two mats of the same design will not be photocopies of each other. That is how you know it is the real material and not virgin stock.
Heat Resistant, Not Heatproof
The rubber is self-extinguishing and handles warm gear without complaint. It is not a torch pad. Park anything still glowing on a proper stand or a quartz puck, not on the print.
No UV on This One
Standard ink, no reactive application anywhere in the print. A blacklight does nothing to it. The iridescent look on the head is drawn, not lit, so it does exactly the same thing in the dark as everything else on the mat, which is nothing.
Die-Cut Means Irregular Edges
The outline follows the flowers, so you get petal lobes and cut valleys instead of a clean edge, and the listed twelve inches is the widest point rather than a uniform footprint. The narrow margin of rubber around each petal is the thinnest section on the piece. Measure your space if it is tight and handle the edge the way you would handle any narrow section of rubber.
A Thin Tan Sliver Along the Petals
There is a slight, consistent layer offset in the flowers that leaves a thin warm tan sliver along the lower right edge of most petals. It is subtle, it runs the same direction on every blossom, and it is consistent enough that it may well be intentional shading rather than misregistration. We are telling you it is there because we cannot say for certain which it is. It does not affect the cut, the print elsewhere, or how the mat sits on a table.
